The great thing about summer in Germany is that you soak up every minute of it. There is no sitting inside restaurants with A/C when the sun is out.
Yesterday for instance I started off the day by sitting on our balcony, reading the newspaper, then I went for a walk, met with a friend at a nice coffee shop and chatted in the shade of some trees, went home, relaxed for a bit and then had dinner outside in a nice restaurant followed by a chilled (alcoholfree these days ;-) ) beer on top of Sonnendeck to watch the game Uruguay:France. Life is good!
The next few days I should take the camera and take a few nice shots of my walking routes ... it's all so nice and green now. Thanks to the rain also...
There seems to be a movie coming out: "Germany - A summer fairy tale." I still regret that I haven't been in Germany during the WorldCup. It must have been amazing... well, ich werd da sein wenn Deutschland gewinnt! :-)
Now what was that all about? First the game kicks off with the Italians fouling, pulling, and what not ... and then Zidane goes crazy and 'head-butts' (new word I just learned form the New York Times) Materazzi! People were seriously shocked, and the latest New York Times article is proof of it. It's more about Zidane than the winners!
"In the seventh minute, Zidane put France ahead, 1-0, on a penalty
kick, becoming only the fourth player to score in two World Cup finals.
But he apparently grew frustrated after narrowly missing a goal on a
header in overtime and at being roughed up by Italy's rugged defense.
He frequently complained to the referee but was told to play on.
In the 109th minute, Materazzi and Zidane seemed to tangle
inconsequentially for position, with Materazzi having his arm on Zidane
or grabbing him slightly. As the two walked upfield, the players spoke
to each other. Then Zidane turned around, approached Materazzi and
head-butted him in the sternum."
And Franz Beckenbauer, Germany's ex-trainer said: "Das darf Zidane nicht passieren. Er hat natürlich
seine Mannschaft geschwächt. Wir wissen, wie sensibel die Franzosen
sind, wenn sie ihren Kapitän nicht mehr sehen. Er ist eigentlich ein
recht zurückhaltender und harmloser Mensch. Irgendetwas muss ihm der
Materazzi gesagt haben."
"Zidane can't do this. He weakened his team. We know that the French are sensitive when they can't see their captain anymore. He is normally a very shy and harmless human being. Materazzi must have said something to him."
Maybe it's true? It won't change the fact that Italy won the world cup, but hey: the real winners are the Spieler der Herzen, the feel good team from Germany! :-)
The third place is not as good as the first place, but there's something about the fact that we WON instead of loosing in the final ;-) ... ok ok ... I'm just trying to make us feel better. Really, I'm proud of the boys, and I'm so happy to hear that my fellow Germans in Germany have been having a great time so far, proudly showing off the German flag without any guilt attached and celebrating even after we lost on Tuesday.
Today I watched the third place match in a pub, and there was a guy who looked just like Michael Ballack - he even wore a Ballack T-shirt!! I wish I had had a camera...
So, tomorrow are the finals, and then Germany will return to normal. Wait, I hope it'll return to something better, more optimistic, and more cheerful!
